Black mesa blue shift meets scp/rpc with crafting. One of the best games of the decade.

Took about 180hrs for me to complete solo because I took my time. I thought I would never replay it but it was so good that I am part way through a max difficulty (but not ironman) run with disability traits and world edits that make not using a wheeled chair cause extreme tiredness. Still discovering new things and trying different equipment. Second run you really have to crank up the difficulty in the world because the combat is the only slightly janky thing not meant to be janky by design.

I hate to write this review as I WANT to say I like this game, but it has a series of problems I just cannot ignore.

Starting with the game progression itself, the game progresses you through 7 main zones, with most having at least 1 pocket dimension in it. They are in order: Offices, Manufacturing West, Labs, Security, Hydroplant, Reactors, and Residential. The first 3 are actually very good and what was available in early access, but everything after that, other than maybe hydroplant, is awful for different reasons. Doing my best to avoid spoilers here, Security is centered around an unkillable hunter enemy... That is entirely pointless because you get an armor set all the way back in manufacturing that makes you invisible. (an item that honestly almost breaks the entire game and should have been locked off until WAY later) And even if you DO get caught by it, there isn't actually any penalty for it. Hydroplant is the last good zone where you unlock all but a small handful of the endgame weapons (laser weapons). Where it gets really bad is Reactors. First off, this zone is the largest in the entire game (or at least it feels like it), and a huge chunk of it is just empty space, meaning it takes forever to get anywhere, and it is by far the most barren and boring zone thematically. There is also a MASSIVE difficulty spike in this zone, with several new enemies introduced who all take a significant amount of effort to take down. The problem isn't even the fact that they are bullet sponges. Remember how I mentioned that you get most of the end-game weapons in Hydroplant? These enemies are resistant to laser damage... The most powerful enemies in the game are resistant to the most powerful weapons in the game... What absolute tard thought that was a good idea? It is also worth mentioning that the portal worlds in the last 2 areas are just as bad as the zones themselves. Then you get to residential... I am honestly convinced the devs just basically gave up once they got to this zone. The zone is the smallest one since Offices/Security, and there are basically no new items to be found. On top of that, the jetpack you unlock in reactors can't be used in the area because... reasons... The entire area is just completely uninspired, and while the part of it known as fragments is nice to look at, it is just as dull.

Next, I want to bring up the weapons in-game, particularly ranged weapons. These were horribly underpowered even when the game was still in EA, and it just never got fixed. Aside from the Scrapshot, Energy Pistol, and Grinder and their upgrades none of the ranged weapons are even worth using at any point. They also start out stupidly inaccurate until you level the skill like 1/3rd to max, forcing you to use them at point-blank range. The firearms you get off dead enemies might as well not exist due to the fact that, at base level, they require an armor part that breaks armor set bonuses, and ammo is so rare that there isn't even enough to keep them fed on single player, let alone playing with friends. On top of that, their damage output is worse than your crafted weapons. You do unlock ammo crafting later, but it is so expensive to make ammo that it is basically an insult that the devs even bothered to add it. Also, with all that in mind, take a WILD F---ING GUESS the only kind of weapons you can hit the final boss with? Once again, what tard thought this was a good idea?

Now we come to something that just doesn't make any sense. You build a basecamp in-game and have to defend it from the occasional raid, yet when I come across some random scientist in a closet, I just leave them there because...? It makes absolutely no sense that you do not gather non-story essential NPCs back at your base to do things for you and consume the excess resources you have by the end of the game. This could have made the raid mechanic actually interesting and entirely replaced the wishing shelf (a shelf you find that can generate small amounts of items you bring it an example of on a regular basis) by sending them out to scavange for you while you have to provide food, water, and supplies for them to keep your base running. I was expecting this to get added in EA, and the base building just feels kind of pointless without it.

Finally, there is a major issue with the fact that the ending produces MORE questions than you have at the start of the game. There is a tractor somewhere in the facility that caused the initial containment failure, this is never brought up again after labs. You never actually find the facility director, who is still MIA. Right before the end, there's a revelation of some mysterious facility and person in charge, literally nothing about this is explained. One of the major NPCs goes missing after you defeat the final boss and is nowhere to be found. Without spoiling it, the defeat of the final boss causes its own major issue and finally... YOU ARE STILL TRAPPED IN THE FACILITY.

These are just the major issues I can remember off the top of my head. I quite frankly don't understand why this game is so well reviewed, as honestly, the initial release into EA was good, then they seemingly rushed the rest of the zones and added very little to the overall content of the game. By the time you hit hydroplant, the game starts to feel a bit slow, and by partway through reactors, you are basically begging for it to end because it has just become a slog. This game suffers from the same problem Fallout 4 has in that it has a lot of good ideas in it, but it never really did anything with them. I really do hate to write a review like this, as there were parts of the game I did have fun with, but there are just too many glaring issues that ultimately ruined the fun.
