Inside the EU’s long-term budget: The multiannual financial framework explained

The EU’s multiannual financial framework, a seven-year budget powering policies within and beyond its borders, will enter negotiations for the post-2027 period in 2025. Building on years worth of analysis of the EU’s long-term budget, we will closely monitor the upcoming negotiations, focusing in particular on Europe’s global role and relations with its neighbourhood, Africa and the Global South.

Is the Lobito Corridor mostly hype?

The Lobito Corridor has been sold as the flagship of Western efforts to compete with China in Africa: a multi-billion-dollar railway carrying critical minerals from the heart of the continent to the Atlantic. The reality is smaller, stranger and far more revealing — a limited rehabilitation of a colonial-era, Chinese-refurbished line whose copper still flows mostly to China. This episode is as much about propaganda and perception as it is about rail and minerals.
In this episode of Europolis: the global Europe podcast, host Poorva Karkare sits down with Lee Jones (Professor of Political Economy and International Relations, Queen Mary University of London) and Shahar Hameiri (Professor of International Politics, University of Queensland) to separate what the Lobito Corridor actually is from the story that has been told about it — and to ask how African governments are exercising their own agency in the process.

The Abidjan–Lagos Corridor (ALC) aims to provide regional connections within one of the world’s fastestgrowing urban markets. Rapid urban growth and rising food demand along the corridor offer opportunities for regional trade, value addition and investment. Yet in practice, it remains a high-friction trade route, characterised by fragmentation, persistent non-tariff barriers and high levels of informality. As a result, its potential as a regional agri-food system remains largely untapped, with limited processing capacity and a high-risk investment environment.

If the world is serious about hitting climate targets, emissions from this heavy industry must fall by at least 50% by 2050. But the path forward is as much about geopolitics and trade as it is about technology.
In this episode of Europolis: The Global Europe Podcast, host Poorva Karkare sits down with international trade lawyer and Tulip Consulting director Colette van der Ven to explore why the roadmap to green steel runs directly through India—and why the EU's current regulatory approach might be missing the bigger picture.

Their reflections do not form a single narrative. But taken together, they reveal a system losing its purpose without yet deciding on what should come next.
Over 40 years, ECDPM has worked through major shifts in international cooperation, and once again, we’re in a time of profound change. Our world is drifting towards conflict: a new, more effective form of cooperation could not be more necessary.
